An early example of the politics of personal destruction was carried out by none other than our 7th president, Andrew Jackson. He used slimy, underhanded methods to destroy the reputation and career of Congressman Davy Crockett (yes, the same one who died at the Alamo). Crockett fiercely opposed Jackson’s brutal “Indian Removal Act”.  Jackson used the Act to push Indians from valuable land, which he would then reward to political allies.
