Did You Know?

Before Abraham Lincoln became president, he sometimes publicly criticized and ridiculed politicians. Once such official was named James Shields, who was so offended by the ridicule that he challenged Lincoln to a duel. Lincoln couldn’t get out of it and save his honor, so he reluctantly agreed. As the two prepared to duel to the death, others interceded and stopped them at the last minute. Think how one small twist of an event could have altered all of history. Lincoln learned his lesson from that episode and loathed to criticize anyone again, which is part of the reason he became such a great leader. Lincoln later made amends with Shields and nominated him for Major General. Shields himself became important as he helped deal Stonewall Jackson one of his only defeats of the Civil War.
