Random Thoughts of the Day
Have you ever asked yourself, “Am I crazy?” If you have ever asked yourself that, you’re not crazy. You’re most likely being gaslighted. Gaslighting is a form of psychological abuse aimed at controlling a person by altering reality to the point where the person will doubt their own sanity. The term “gaslighting” comes from a 1930’s play called Gas Light. The main character in the play literally tries to drive his wife crazy by gradually dimming the gas-powered lights in their home. When she notices the lights dimming, her husband not only denies that the lights are dimming, he convinces her that she is imagining it to the point where she questions her own sanity.
We’ve seen many examples of gaslighting over the past year, mostly related to the Covid plandemic. The most obvious example I’ve seen in years is the latest craze that Trump is “inciting violence.” No sane person, other than Deep State politicians and media manipulators, can read recent messages from Trump and interpret them as some call to violence, especially when they say word-for-word, “Peaceful protests only” and “no violence or breaking the law.” Most people have to question their own sanity when they read the statements and hear they’re used as justification for mass censorship and impeachment. In other words–gaslighting. Words and phrases somehow don’t have the same meaning as we’ve learned our whole lives. If they were so-called “incitement of violence,” they weren’t very effective. Almost 75 million people voted for Trump, yet only a few hundred broke any laws protesting recently.
We see more gaslighting when we consider the media and Democrats blatant double-standards in regards to protests and disputed elections. Your sanity is tested as you hear the media and Big Tech assure us of election integrity after four years of whining about the 2016 election. You question your sanity when a year filled with BLM, Antifa, and anti-Trump violence, protests, and riots involving 1000 times the number of people as the Capitol protests is treated as if they never even happened, with one small protest now deemed “insurrection.”
You question your own sanity when a year of lockdowns & mask mandates has only produced misery and economic destruction without any noticeable reduction of Covid rates. You see New York and California held as the models for fighting Covid as they far exceed the rates of cases & deaths. Then, you’re called anti-science and censored if you even question the effectiveness of the measures. Gaslighting.
You question your sanity when you hear Big Tech, the media, and liberals complain that Trump is an anti-science fascist, as they push for mass banning of social media accounts, removal of any alternative-thought posts, and the punishing & demonizing of any entire class of people — Trump supporters.
It seems every day the past year has been a new case study in gaslighting. It’s not an accident. It’s become one of the most effective tools of manipulation, supplemented with brainwashing techniques carried out by all major institutions of influence in the country–the media, Big Tech, entertainment, and public education.
Returning to the latest gaslighting incident–Trump’s “incitement” of violence–which do you think is going to cause more anger and potential violence?
1. Trumps’s relatively benign recent statements
2. The massive Big Tech purge of accounts, posts, and platforms. The media double-standards on protests & elections. Joe Biden & Nancy Pelosi calling 75 million Trump voters racists and domestic terrorists. Covid lockdowns, mandates, and other steamrolling of Constitutional rights. Another impeachment process that accomplishes absolutely nothing other than giving another slap in the face to 75 million Americans. Coordinated Deep State efforts to ensure election results are never questioned or audited. And on and on.
Perhaps the biggest test to my own sanity is wondering if some of these people really are stupid enough and living in such an impenetrable bubble that they truly believe Trump words are the cause of the anger? Or is this all 100% part of a plan by the puppetmasters, and I’m just being gaslighted?

Thanks for your explanation of gaslighting. Now I know that the lights are dimming, and it is not a reflection of my sanity. However, with regard to your meme about swearing, I may have offset any dimming that has occurred because I’ve sworn so much during this post-election year that I’m certain my IQ has increased by at least 100 points.
Good point, PJ! I’ve filled a closet full of swear jars the past year; ready for Mensa.
Just want to say I enjoy your daily memes and write ups. Do you listen to podcasts?
Thanks, Jason! I don’t listen to podcasts but often read the transcripts of them.
Regarding your Random Thoughts of the Day: I would also add: “You question your sanity when they tell you to ‘stand out of the crowd’ and ‘be your own person’ and ‘it doesn’t matter what people think of you’ and ‘we need diversity in our lives’ etc. yet all they do is promote conformity to their ideals and values and if you don’t conform you’re labeled as a dissenter to the left’s official policy on the social order of the world.”
Your “Random Thoughts of the Day” is the best article on gaslighting! Well said. I’m a therapist and work with people who are coming out of abusive relationships where gaslighting is the norm for them. The reason gaslighting is so manipulative is because the manipulator (the left in this case) is a predator and preys on people who are vulnerable to that type of manipulation/abuse (the right in this case).
My problem with this though is that, just like other predator/prey interactions, the prey isn’t always innocent and I think that the right is also somewhat to blame. What I mean is that, through our inaction, through our refusal to defend ourselves, we end up placating and enabling the left to do this. The left has done this for so long that we accept it as the norm. The right’s temperament is to hand wave it and excuse it and let it slide because we are generally more conflict avoidant than those on the left but that only makes things worse as the left continues to take advantage of our grace and forgiveness. We give them an inch and they take a mile.
We saw this in the Capital protests. The left gaslighted and what has everyone done on the right? We apologized and hung our heads in shame. We need to stop doing that! We need to stand up to the bully and assertively pronounce that we won’t be shamed or bullied into believing their lies anymore. After the last 8 months of antifa and BLM violence, the left has absolutely NO ground to stand on in criticizing us for protesting for ONE DAY.
I coach the victims that I work with to be assertive, set boundaries and stand up to the bullies when possible. The right desperately needs to stop placating the people who paint us as the villains. We aren’t the villains. They are!
Exactly!
Study shows 9 out of 10 liberals and conservatives agree….
Republicans are reprehensible!!
Bullies are cowards, we all know that. Looking to politicians for leadership is like purposely sabotaging your own future. Standing up to bullies comes at great personal peril, comfortable people (senate republicans for example) are not up for the challenge. We must take on the challenge ourselves. We must become the leader we wish we had…
Rosa Parks is one of many we can look to for how to’s.. Before she got credited with desegregating buses, she was thrown in jail! and her and her husband were fired from their jobs. Scorned and shunned from society.
That single brave act had serious immediate and very negative consequences. It emboldened enough others to action, which directed the change, but Rosa herself basically sacrificed her own life for the life of others, others she didn’t know, others who may not have deserved it.., Bravery is the absence of selfishness. Bravery is conviction that cannot be diluted. We are not history books, the clarity of the situation only comes when the dust has settled. So we do not have the luxury of understanding, we must stand against the wrong because our gut and instincts told us to, not because we were given permission or had a chance to research the subject.., Allow yourself to get that queasy feeling, your face feeling hot, your organs quivering….you feel like you may pop from being so far out of your comfort zone, but you look totally normal… keep proceeding into that feeling until it’s not so scary, until it doesn’t feel so extreme. And then you’ll have completed your transformation from complicit and scared to courageous and resolute.
Bravery is not the absence of fear, it is the presence of courage!!
It takes a keen mind and veracious appetite for truth with an unwavering moral compass. If you have this bravery, encourage others to develop theirs. If you don’t have it yet, all you have to do is try, and keep moving forward! Go team!!
Excellent points, Laura & Steve!
