  1. “Are you better off now than you were four years ago?”

There’s a whole bunch of “recent arrivals” who would answer an emphatic “Yes” to that question.

In 1970 when I came in legally – as part of a one hour interview in Sydney. “If you become a burden on the taxpayers and we deport you, we can take any money you have in a bank account to help pay for your deportation.” “If you own land, we can sell that to help pay for your deportation.” “You will register for the draft within six months of arriving in the US.” (I was 28 at the time.)

The ‘fun’ part. Police clearance everywhere I’d lived for the previous three years. I’d spent most of that time on the island of Borneo, oil exploration. Remember the old purple ink pads, that’s what they used for ‘taking’ my fingerprints. Took days to get it off my fingers.

Arrived June 6. Started a fulltime job the day after the July 4 weekend. I didn’t bother with classified ads, I found a company that matched possible employers with applicants. Cost me a months pay, but it was worth it.

And some people wonder why I’m seem a trifle upset with the situation at the border today…..
