walz abolish electoral college so new york california decide elections trump lead

Whenever it looks like Democrats may lose the presidency to electoral college totals, they inevitably fall back on the argument the popular vote should decide. To an extent, it makes sense. Unfortunately, the federal government has become such a behemoth that it’s overtaken the ability of states to govern themselves. People rightly point on the degradation of Constitution protections of the 1st, 4th, and other amendments, but you rarely hear about the 10th Amendment, which gives all powers of governing not explicitly stated in the Constitution to the states & people.

It makes sense as our Founding Fathers were trying to prevent a repeat of despotic tyranny, and each state is in a way its own country–different culture, climate, traditions, industries, and so on. Do you think the people of California, Vermont, and New York want to have laws on religion, abortion, guns, etc. made by people of Texas, West Virginia, and Wyoming, or vice versa? Also, virtually all the popular vote margins of the Left come from a few big cities, most of which have highly questionable vote totals. Notably, California recently passed a law making it illegal to require a voter ID. Merrick Garlands’s DOJ is suing states like Virginia who are trying to purge non-citizens from voter rolls. If we didn’t live in such a gaslighting clown world, these would be some of the most obvious cheating scandals in American history.

But even if the voting was 100% legit, if we abandoned the electoral college, there’s no way the popular vote would come out the same. Why? First of all, millions of people stay home on voting day because they live in states where the margin is so big that it’s a waste of time. Second, in an electoral system, politicians direct almost all their time & money to swing states, ignoring the states they have in the bag or have no chance of winning. Lastly, politicians would likely modify their policy positions to cater to larger populations rather than pander to swing-state voters.

America’s system of government was designed as a series of compromises designed to protect the rights of the individual while providing checks’n’balances to prevent power being overly concentrated in a few hands, even if elected by a majority. Let’s remember that slavery and minority discrimination existed for centuries despite majority support. Our system of government put structures in place to eventually eliminate them. When the Left tries to eliminate pillars of the American republic like the electoral college and Supreme Court, it only takes us back to times where despots and oppressive majorities could erode the rights of Americans. Maybe we should stop using “Progressive” to describe anything in the Left’s agenda.
