The fastest growing political party is the Libertarian Party, which takes votes almost equally from both Democrats and Republicans. Every election also brings a surge of people switching to Independent status. The only thing keeping the two major parties in power is the mistaken belief that a 3rd party vote is a waste. Eventually Americans will learn Democrats and Republicans are the same animal with different rhetoric.
